Notes from MLB offseason: Zaun still in Rays’ mix

On the same day they acquired another veteran catcher via trade, the Tampa Bay Rays offered St. Francis High graduate Gregg Zaun salary arbitration.

Zaun, who became a free agent when the Rays declined a $2 million option on his contract for 2010, remains in the team’s catching picture despite the acquisition of Kelly Shoppach via trade with the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.

If Zaun accepts arbitration by the Monday deadline, he will ensure his return to the team for 2010 on a one-year contract with the dollar figure to be decided in arbitration if the parties can’t reach a deal on their own. In that case, he would remain part of the Rays’ current catcher picture, which includes right-handed Dioner Navarro and the newly acquired Shoppach.

As a left-handed batter, Zaun could be retained as part of a platoon.

If Zaun signs with another team, the Rays will receive draft-pick compensation.
