Bell-Jeff girls’ team has high hopes for season

The Bellarmine-Jefferson High girls’ basketball team is coming off a record-breaking season, the most successful season in city history.

In March, Bell-Jeff defeated Pinewood, 55-47, in the CIF State Basketball Division V Championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento. It was the first state title by any team — in any sport — in area history.

The win gave Bell-Jeff a 34-1 record, which set a new school record. In addition, the team ended the season on a 20-game winning streak. The Guards also won the CIF Southern Section Division V-A championship against Santa Clara, 61-31.

Bell-Jeff lost its best player from a year ago, Shelley Gupilan (18.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.8 steals a game), to graduation.

Even though the Guards lost Gupilan, and All-CIF standout Elizabeth Hawthorne, the team could actually be better than last season.

“The great thing about this team is the girls are hungry,” Bell-Jeff Coach Bryan Camacho said. “Their work ethic is just amazing and they are really putting in the hard work to get better.”
