It was a bittersweet day for the Hoover High boys’ water polo program, as the Tornadoes’ first-ever trip to the CIF Southern Section Division VI quarterfinals ended with an 18-10 loss to top-seeded Webb.

But in the defeat, Tornadoes super sophomore Hakop Kaplanyan scored six goals, establishing a CIF Southern Section single-season record with 229 goals.

The previous record was 226 by Bell Gardens’ Alexander Hernandez in 2006.

Kaplanyan tied the record with 3:31 to go in the second quarter of Saturday morning’s match and broke it less than a minute later, scoring his fourth goal of the match with 2:38 to go in the period.

Webb will now play Glendale, which defeated Walnut in a quarterfinal match at Burbank High on Saturday afternoon, in Wednesday’s semifinal round in Irvine.
