A breakthrough 2009 season in the Mojave Desert Racing League for the Pondella Motorsports trophy truck racing team encountered a hard-luck ending on Saturday at the Stoddard 250 in the Barstow desert.

Needing only to finish the race to capture the Class 100 championship, Pondella, a Glendale resident, and his crew were knocked out of the race by a transmission fire and could not complete the nine-lap race over a 25-mile course. As a result, Pondella was surpassed by Mike Bilek in the final points standings, finishing in second with 201 points to Bilek’s 221.

Pondella, competing in the series for just the second year, finished in the overall point standings across all seven vehicle classes.
