During the eighth week of high school football, there were plenty of highlight performances. Here are the week’s best …

1) Austin Nieves, St. Francis High – Nieves filled in and then some for injured standout Dietrich Riley. Nieves rushed for 157 yards in just seven carries to propel St. Francis to a 34-7 win against St. Paul in its Mission League opener. Nieves’ biggest highlight came on a dazzling 79-yard scoring run in which he weaved through defenders up the right sideline and then cut all the way across the field. He also caught four passes for 60 yards.

2) Harry Pessy, Crescenta Valley High – The senior back took the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown in the Falcons’ 38-27 win against Pasadena, beginning an all-around astounding night. He had 228 all-purpose yards and two total touchdowns, as he also scored on a 34-yard rushing score. He finished with 114 yards rushing in 14 carries.

3) Michael Melnick, St. Francis High – Just a sophomore, Melnick has made big contributions to the Golden Knights all year long, but against St. Paul he stepped up big time. Offensively, he had 13 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown and on defense, he had nine tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.
