La Cañada’s Katie Hansen close to qualifying for World Cup

La Cañadan Katie Hansen is getting closer to qualifying for the USA Luge’s World Cup girls’ roster with a third-place finish on Friday in the second World Cup qualifying race with two more qualifying races to go.

Those chosen for the World Cup roster have a very good chance at making the 2010 Olympic squad.

After winning the Junior World Championships in the tail end of the 2007-08 luge season, Hansen suffered a back injury early in 2008-09 that cost her half of her season. Hansen has since said she feels she’s at 100% and her finishes in these qualifying races seem to back her up on that.

The third race will be held in Park City, Utah, on Nov. 6. The team will be selected after the fourth and final race on Nov. 15 at the Olympic track in Whistler, Canada.
